WORKING WITH THE POEM

Question:- 1. Answer these questions.

(i) Why does the poet want to know where the teachers go at four o’clock?

Answer:-  His teachers, according to the poet, are not ordinary people. He considers them to be superhumans or special humans. So he’s curious to know where they go and what they do after school.

 

 

(ii) What are the things normal people do that the poet talks about?

Answer:- According to the poet, normal people live in houses, freshen up, wear pyjamas at home, wash their clothes, watch TV, live with their parents, make mistakes,  misplace books, get punished in the corner, scribble on their class desks, wear old dirty jeans and linen, etc.

 

 

 (iii) What does he imagine about

  1. where teachers live?
  2. what they do at home?
  3. the people with whom they live?
  4. their activities when they were children in school?

Answer:- (a) He imagines that his teachers live in their house with their family.

(b) They wash their socks,  wear pyjamas, pick their noses, and even watch TV at home.

(c) They live with family members like their parents .

(d) During childhood, even they were bad, made mistakes, misspelled a word, and were punished and scolded for eating chocolates in class, they lost their hymn books at home, they scribbled on desk tops or even wore dirty jeans, etc.

 

(iv) Why does the poet wonder if teachers also do things that other people do?

Answer:- The boy respect his teachers as special persons. They are his ideals who are perfect in every respect. So he wonders  if they do the same things as other people.

 

 (v) How does the poet plan to find out? What will he do once he finds out?

Answer:- The poet wants to learn more about his teacher personally. He plans to observe one of his teachers and learn more about what he or she does after school. Then he’ll write a poem on his findings for the benefit of other kids.

 

Question:- 2. What do you think these phrases from the poem mean?

(i) punished in the corner

(ii) leave their greens

Answer:- (i) Punished in the Corner: This expression refers to being caught in the act of misbehaving in class and being ordered to stand in the corner as a punishment.

 

(ii) leave their greens: Some kids throw their cooked green veggies away or leave them uneaten. By this phrase child wants to know whether his teachers too in their childhood did the same or not.
