INTERJECTION

Meaning | Definition :- The words that have no Grammatical Value, but are used to express sudden feelings or emotions are called Interjections.

An interjection is one of the 8 parts of speech.

In other words, It is a word or phrase that is grammatically independent from the words around it, and mainly expresses feeling rather than meaning of a sentence.

Types of Interjections / Kinds of Interjections

Generally, interjections can be divided into three types according to the meaning they give in sentence:

1.volitive,
2. emotive,
3.cognitive.

Volitive interjections: function as imperative or directive expressions, demanding or requesting something from the recipient (e.g. “Shh!” = “Be quiet!”).


Emotive interjections: are used to express emotions, such as nauseate and dread or disgust and fear (e.g. “Yuck!” = disgust).


Cognitive interjections:  express feelings which are more related to cognition, or data known to the speaker of the expression (e.g. “Wow!” = surprise).

Interjections can also be divided as follow:-

Strong Interjection usually stands alone and are often punctuated with an exclamation point. 

For Example :- Oh!      Wow!      My goodness!

Wheras Mild interjections are included within a sentence and are then set off by commas.

For Example :- Well, it’s about time you showed up.
