Question 1. Answer the following questions briefly.

(a) What are the major landforms?

Answer:- The major landforms are mountains, plateaus and plains.

 

(b) What is the difference between a mountain and a plateau?

Answer:-

                        Mountain

Plateau

A mountain is any natural elevation of the earth surface.

A plateau is an elevated flat land.

It is considerably higher than the surrounding area.

It is a flat-topped table land, standing above the surrounding area.

 

(c) What are the different types of mountains?

Answer:-  Mountains are of three types—

  1. Fold mountains
  2. Block mountains
  3. Volcanic mountains

 

(d) How are mountains useful to man?

Answer:- Man can benefit from mountains in a number of ways:

1 Water is stored in mountains.

2 Irrigation and hydroelectricity production both need water from the mountains.

3 Crops can be grown well in the terraces and river valleys.

4 There is a diverse range of vegetation and wildlife in the Mountains.

5 The mountains are a popular location for a number of sports, including paragliding, hang gliding, river rafting, and skiing.

 

(e) How are plains formed?

Answer:-  Rivers and their tributaries typically form plains. Mountains’ slopes are eroded by rivers as they flow down them. The eroded material is carried forward by them. Then, along their courses and in their valleys, they discharge their load of stones, sand, and silt. These deposits are where plains are created.

 

(f) Why are the river plains thickly populated?

Answer:-  River plains are thickly populated because the land here is so fertile. People also get flat land for building houses and for cultivation.

 

(g) Why are mountains thinly populated?

Answer:- Mountains thinly populated because they have very harsh cold climate. Here the slopes are very steep also, they offer very little land for farming.
