About NIOS
The National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS), Previously known as National Open School, (name changed in 2002) was established in November,1989 as an autonomous organisation in pursuance of National Policy on Education 1986. It was built up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development of the Government of India in 1989 to give training to all sections of society under the thought process to expand proficiency and pointed forward for adaptable learning. The NIOS is a national board that controls assessments for Secondary and Senior Secondary assessments like the CBSE and the CISCE. NIOS also offers professional courses after passing the secondary class.
Why NIOS ?
The NIOS open school has provided the convenient way of the distance learning platform. Students who cannot attend regular classes can also continue their education through it
NIOS Certificates are Equivalent to the Certificates provided by CBSE and ICSE and any Other State Boards. Moreover it the largest Open Schooling System in the World.
All Jobs and Competitive and Entrance Exams can be applied after studying from NIOS open School with that, students of NIOS can further continue their studies by applying for Graduation Degrees offered by various Universities.
Programmes Offered by NIOS
The Board offers numerous programmes:-(Broadly categorized into 5 groups mentioned below).:–
A. Open Basic Education (OBE)
It gives fundamental instruction to the students and is equal to some other ordinary associated formal schools. It is broadly divided into 2 main Categories and then further divided into a three-level program. :-
- Age less than fourteen 14 Years.
- Age more than fourteen 14 Years.
- (I) OBE ‘A’ Level Course (equal to Class III).
- (ii) OBE ‘B’ Level Course (equal to Class V).
- (iii) OBE ‘C’ Level Course (equal to Class VIII).
B. Scholastic Courses
Levels:-
(I) Secondary Course (equal to Class X)
Secondary course of NIOS is equivalent to 10th Class of CBSE (or any other board ), it syllabus includes the chapters of class 10, 9 and some important chapters of 8th class also which are being taught in Regular Schools.
(ii) Senior Secondary Course (equal to Class XII
Senior Secondary course of NIOS is equivalent to 12th Class of CBSE (or any other board ), it syllabus includes all chapters of class 11th & 12th also which are being taught in Regular Schools in various streams like -Arts, Commerce, Science & vocational.
C. Professional Education Courses
The professional courses offered by NIOS show understudies target aptitudes in different fields, for example, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry, Business, Accounts and Commerce, IT and Technology, Engineering and Architecture, Health and Paramedical Science, Home Science, Hospitality Management, Teacher Training, among others.
D. Life Enrichment Programs
Ladies strengthening (Paripurana Mahila), Yoga and reflection and Indian music, and so forth are a portion of the life-improvement programs offered by NIOS.
E. NIOS D.El.Ed course
NIOS D.El.Ed is a course which is specially designed for inservice untrained teachers who are working in different schools in our country.
NIOS -Admission, 2020, Class 10th, 12th
Eligibility Criteria
Secondary: The minimum age requirement to take admission in the Secondary Course (i.e 10th Class) is 14 years as on 31st July 2019 (means the student must born on or before 31.07.2005). |
A Self Declaration certificate stating that “I have studied enough to be able to pursue secondary course” is also required for admission in the Secondary Course. |
A learner who had already studied at the secondary level can also seek admission in NIOS for either to complete his course (in case it was not completed) or to improve his performance. |
Sr. Secondary: The minimum age requirement to take admission in the Senior Secondary Course(i.e 12th Class ) is 15 years. As on 31st July, 2019 (means the student must born on or before 31.07.2004). |
In order to take admission in the Senior Secondary course (i,e 12th class), the learner must have passed the Secondary course (i.e 10th class) from any recognized Board. |

Secondary Course
1.) For 5 Subjects :-
- a.) Male :- Rs. 1800/ – (General Category).
- b.) Female :- Rs. 1450/ – (General Category).
- c.)SC/ST, Ex-Servicemen,Persons with Disabilities(PWD) :- Rs. 1200/ (Exempted Category).
Senior Secondary Course
1.) For 5 Subjects :-
- a.) Male :- Rs. 2000/ – (General Category).
- b.) Female :- Rs. 1650/ – (General Category).
- c.)SC/ST, Ex-Servicemen,Persons with Disabilities(PWD) :- Rs. 1300/- (Exempted Category).
2.) For Each ADDDITIONAL SUBJECTS (at both levels i.e 10th & 12th ) :- Rs 720/-
Supporting Documents required
- Passport size colored & Recent Photograph of applicant.
- Signature of applicant (preferably in Black Ink on white sheet).
- Valid Identity proof of applicant (like Passport or Ration Card or or Aadhaar card or etc.).
- Valid proof of applicant’s Date of Birth (like Aadhaar Card with date of birth printed on it in the dd/mm/yyyy format, Birth Certificate etc.).
- A valid proof of Residence of applicant (like Aadhaar Card with complete address printed on it, valid Passport etc.).
- Address proof of applicant i.e. Aadhaar Card/Water Bill/Electricity Bill/Voter ID/Ration Card.
- 8th Class Marksheet of applicant (in case of secondary course ,10th class) or class 10th Marksheet of applicant (in case of senior secondary course, 12th).
- Social category/Caste certificate (in case the applicant belongs to SC/ST/OBC social category).or Ex-serviceman certificate (in case he/she is an Ex-serviceman).
- Disability certificate (in case applicant is having any kind of disability).
- Fail Mark sheet of previous Board, failing which Transfer of Credit (TOC) marks will not be.
HOW TO APPLY FOR ADMISSION IN NIOS (STEP-BY-STEP)
Here we have tried to provide each and every single STEP which will help you to fill the application form of NIOS.
1. Open any Internet browser – like GOOGLE and visit: www.nios.ac.in
2. On the left hand side you will find ADMISSION link click on it.
3. Now read the instructions given there carefully and click to Proceed button to continue.
4. Now select your State and then Identity type. Enter the id number of your selected Identity type.
5. Now select the Course for which you want to appear (Secondary for class 10 & Senior Secondary for class 12) and click on Submit to continue.
6. Now an application form will appear with four broad sections:
i). Basic Details.
ii). Optional Details.
iii). Subject Selection.
iv). Study Centre Selection.
7. Basic Details section is further divided into 3 sections:
i). Basic Details of applicant.
ii). Address (permanent and residential address).
iii). And Other Information.
8. Fill all the information and click on Generate OTP link. You will receive 2 separate OTP on mobile as well as on email address, both is required to validate with the OTP.
9. After validating the OTP, enter the other details about address, Social Category, etc.
10. In the Other Information section you have to now upload the copy of your latest passport size photo, identity document and other documents like last marks sheet, Cast certificate, etc.
11. Now fill the optional details and then go for selections of Subjects section.
12. Select the Study Centre of your choice, keep the location of your home and centre in your mind while selecting it (You can chose maximum three preferences).
13. Now, Review the application form for corrections, if required.
14. If the filled form is completed and you found it OK.
15. Then you need to make payment you will see 2 options there- right now or click on Pay Later.
16. If you want to pay right now, select the appropriate Payment Gateway and make payment.
17. That’s it. You have successfully applied for your enrollment in NIOS.
