Question:- 1. Has Lushkoff  become a beggar by circumstance or by choice?

Answer:-  Lushkoff has become a beggar by choice.He used to sing in a Russian choir before being fired for drunkenness. Lushkoff decided to become a beggar instead of looking for another hard work.

Question:- 2. What reasons does he give to Sergei for his telling lies?

Answer:- Lushkoff says that he was fired from the Russian choir because he was an alcoholic. He lies because no one would ever help him or give him money if he told the truth.

Question:- 3. Is Lushkoff a willing worker? Why, then, does he agree to chop wood for Sergei?

Answer:- No, Lushkoff  is not a willing worker. He agrees to chop wood for Sergei because he is ashamed and trapped by his own words, not because he is hungry or wants to work.

Question:- 4. Sergei says, “I am happy that my words have taken effect.” Why does he say so? Is he right in saying this?

Answer:- Sergei seemed happy with the beggar’s performance. When Lushkoff’s duty of packing and transporting the furniture was completed, he praised him and gave him a rouble. But he was incorrect in his judgment since Lushkoff had not developed the habit of working hard. He was still a useless fellow.

Question:- 5. Lushkoff is earning thirty five roubles a month. How is he obliged to Sergei for this?

Answer:-  Sergei played very important role in improving the condition of Lushkoff. It was because of Sergei that now Lushkoff could earn thirty five roubles a month. He now earns money by working hard. He can now raise his head in self-respect. So he feels obliged to Sergei for this.

Question:- 6. During their conversation Lushkoff reveals that Sergei’s cook, Olga, is responsible for the positive change in him. How has Olga saved Lushkoff?

Answer:- Olga was a friendly and caring woman. She cared deeply about people. She became aware of Lushkoff’s situation and made every effort to help him. She took care of his part since she wanted to transform him. She continued to criticise him in order to help him develop. When he realised how she felt about him, his heart began to shift. As a result, Olga was the one who brought about the positive transformation in him.
