Definition| Meaning of Adverb :-  An adverb is a word that qualifies – a verb, an adjective, an adverb, a preposition, a conjunction, or sometimes a complete sentence.

  • A verb:-

e.g. She works intelligently.

  • An adjective:-

e.g. He is very smart.

  • An adverb:-

e.g. He works very intelligently.

  • A preposition:-

e.g.  The helicopter hovered exactly over her house.

  • A conjunction:-

e.g. She likes him simply, because he has a clear conscience.

  • A complete sentence:-

e.g. Unfortunately, all were injured.

TYPES OF ADVERBS / KINDS OF ADVERBS:-

Adverbs are of three types:-

  1. Simple Adverbs
  2. Relative Adverbs
  3. Interrogative Adverbs
  • 1. Simple Adverbs
  • The adverbs that denotes place, time, number, frequency of manner, reason, degree, affirmation or negation are known as Simple Adverbs.

They can further be divided into 8 sub types:-

  • Adverbs of Manner :- It tells us how a work is done.
  • Adverbs of time :- It tells us when the action took place.
  • Adverbs of place :- It tells us where the action took place.
  • Adverbs of frequency/ number :- It tells us how often the action took place.
  • Adverbs of degree :- It shows how much the action took place.
  • Adverbs of reason :- It tells us why the action took place.
  • Adverbs of affirmation :- It contains affirmative words like- Surely, Certainly, Truly, etc….
  • Adverbs of Negation :- It contains Negative words like- No, Not, Never, etc…
  • 2. Relative Adverbs
  • Relative Adverbs helps to join sentences. It points towards its antecedents (i.e nouns/pronouns) and denotes reason, place or manner of an action.
  • 3. Interrogative Adverbs
  • Adverbs that ask question about place, reason or manner of an action are called Interrogative Adverbs
