- Why was Kezia afraid of her father?
Answer:- Kezia was afraid of her father since he used to talk harshly with her. He had a tendency of finding out her mistakes. He was strict and controlling. He never played with her. Over his spectacles, he used to give her a terrifying look.
- Who were the people in Kezia’s family?
Answer:- Kezia’s family had her grandmother, mother and father and Kezia.
- What was Kezia’s father’s routine
(i) before going to his office?
(ii) after coming back from his office?
(iii) on Sundays?
Answer:-
- Before leaving to his office, he used to casually kiss Kezia.
- After returning from his office, he would request for the newspaper and tea.
- On Sundays, he would sleep and snore while stretching out over the sofa with his handkerchief on his face and his feet on one of the nicest cushions.
- In what ways did Kezia’s grandmother encourage her to get to know her father better?
Answer:- Kezia’s grandmother would encourage her to get to know her father better by asking her down to the drawing room and start a pleasant conversation with him. She also asked Kezia to make a pin cushion out of a lovely yellow silk piece as a birthday present for her father.

- Kezia’s efforts to please her father resulted in displeasing him very much. How did this happen?
Answer:- Kezia used to be afraid of her father since he spoke to her in a harsh manner. Her grandma once advised her to make a pin cushion for him as a gift for his next birthday. It was a chance for Kezia to please him, so she took advantage of it. She sewed three sides of cloth material and searched for items that could be packed within the stitched linen. She quickly discovered a large number of sheets of paper. Actually, they contained her father’s Port Authority speech. She ripped them apart and placed them inside her case.
When her father went looking for the documents, he couldn’t find them. After some time, he discovered that Kezia had ripped them up to build a pin cushion. He became angry and beat her with a ruler. As a result, her attempts to impress her father displeasing him very much.
- Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers”. What kind of father was Mr Macdonald, and how was he different from Kezia’s father?
Answer:- Kezia decides that there are “different kinds of fathers” exist.
- Mr. Macdonald was a kind and loving father. He was a gentle and forgiving man. With his children, he liked to laugh and play. He interacted with them in a nice manner.
- He was not at all like Kezia’s father. Her father was harsh, strict and unfriendly.
- How does Kezia begin to see her father as a human being who needs her sympathy?
Answer:- Kezia had a nightmare one night that terrified her too much. She was terrified and crying. When she awoke, she discovered her father standing beside her bed, holding a candle. He inquired as to what the problem was. When he came to know about her nightmare, he extinguished the candle, bent down, and picked up the child in his arms. He took her into the master bedroom. He laid her on the bed and wrapped her in the blankets. He also lay down beside her. Her father advised her to warm her feet by rubbing them on his legs. This made her realise that he had to work hard every day, and as a result, he was too exhausted to play with her like Mr. Macdonald.
